Fulham developed in a piecemeal fashion, not as a single village but as a series of settlements, the most prominent of which were Fulham Town, Parsons Green, Walham Green, North End and Sands End. A map of the Fulham area.

Prior to the nineteenth century it was best known for market gardens, but the arrival of the railways heralded rapid expansion and the open space was quickly filled in when industry took root along the riverfront.

Nowadays Bishop's Park (tennis and boating), Hurlingham Park (athletics, tennis, swimming), Eel Brook Common and South Park provide green space. There are also attractive walks along the riverfront and good sports and leisure facilities.

Fulham's main commercial streets - New Kings Road and Fulham Road, are lively, cosmopolitan and have a burgeoning collection of stylish shops, restaurants and bars.
