Customer reviews for Souk Bazaar

Rating: I went to Souk Bazaar on Saturday evening with a couple of friends. We were seated in the basement, which was cosy and full of atmosphere, so we had high hopes. The waiter gave us a sheet of paper with a set menu, when we asked about the full a la carte menu he said that they didn't serve it at weekends. This seemed odd, but the set menu sounded good so we went with it. The starters were quite nice, but when the main courses came we were only given 3 of the five on the menu. After a while we asked the waitress for the remaining chicken and merguez dishes, which she clearly had no intention of bringing to us, eventually a bowl of chicken bits and with two merguez on top arrived....not the chicken with saffron and herbs and the couscous with merguez we had been promised. The food was average, not great, but what really annoyed us was the sight of the full a la carte menu in the hands of the people sat either side of us. I asked the waiter who served us why we hadn't been given the choice of the normal menu and he put it down to a breakdown in communication. Myself, I think they thought that we were tourists who they could swindle into a full three course meal. The waiter offered some free drinks to make up for this 'misunderstanding', we declined but vowed never to go there again. A very disappointing experience.6874

Rating: Last visited Souk around 2004, seriously gone downhill since. The service was terrible, slow and charged for drinks that they forgot to bring. The food was tasteless compared to a few years ago. The meat was tough and fatty with awful stock. This was a Saturday and it was half full in comparison to 2004 when you would be lucky to get a seat. Obviously other customers had noticed the difference too. I was completely gutted as I remembered this place to be superb. The prices are high considering the low quality. In 2004 I would have rated this a 9.6265

Rating: I walked down Lichfield Street on my way to the IVY and looked through the windows of Souk. Its look enchanting a bedwin tent in the middle of London. The place is filled with authentic brick and brack that gives the whole place an Aladdin’s cave feel to it. The leather cushions can be a little uncomfortable if you have long legs and aren’t as flexible as you use to be, but there are wooden chairs at the tables down stairs. We were shown our seats, which to my delight were located in a small recess downstairs of which there are a few. A curtain drawn across the entrance gave us complete privacy from the rest of restaurant. The waiters, particularly one called Rashid, who I think was the assistant manager, couldn’t have been more helpful. He explained fully what the dishes were, what they contained, how they were cooked. He constantly came up to check that we were enjoying ourselves. He recommended the house special to drink, Vodka, Rose Water and fresh mint leaves, they were heavenly and went down a little to well. The food arrived which was unbelievable, the lamb in Prunes was the perfect combination of sweet and savoury, the spinach and potatoes was so delicious. We ordered the set menu for 2 but to be honest there was enough for 4. Half way through the meal we heard the cheering from the rest of the restaurant and the twinkling of bells. On drawing the curtain back we were elated to see a belly dancer giving it her all, she was clearly enjoying it as did the rest of the restaurant. I would highly recommend the restaurant, particularly the private nooks. Well worth a visit.3679

Rating: I found Souk after looking through an old restaurant guide and wanted an North_african meal. After booking I began to read some of these reviews and became a bit concerned, but went along with the booking anyway. To sum up: food was nice (starter average) Staff were O.k in general, however if you want a good night, don't ask questions about your bill (e.g been counting drinks and know they have over charged you)- they don't have the patients to explain anything calmy and politely. They also tried to charge me double for a booking! Service can really bring down an evening!you don't pay near £400 to have a rude waiter. Ambience: mind you head, and if you don't like sitting on cushions (or have long legs), keep your bookings under 5 people as you will be allocated a different part of the restaurant. I would not reccomend bookings over 10 people due to space and seating, unless you intend to hire a whole room ect.. It is also more difficult to keep an eye on your guests ordering more 'complimentary' drinks (which the waiters will oblige without consulting the person who has booked, in an attempt to get more money, even if you tell them before hand not to). My party consisted of 15 people in the evening, I ordered a dancer (who you pay £35 extra for and she dances for 5 minuites (2 songs) but was friendly and well mannered) however the dancer also goes round the rest of the restaurant after, dancing for other customers who had not payed for her (which is rather annoying that they get it for free and you don't (strange). The food was nice, with the main dish being better that the starter. However as noticed by someone else on this site ( and guests of mine who could hear) the waiters can be rude, callous and impatient when speeking to you. They were to me and it did bring my whole mood and evening down. Not all of them were rude however, it was just one asshole in particular! There are also what appears to be un-advertised bottles of water which everyone in my party assumed were included in the bill (the ones on the table when you arrive), however they are £2.5 each (which I only found out because I asked after 6 had been opened) adding an unexpected £30 to my bill. We were on the £15 per head set menu. P.S the £15 per head set menu is not actually £15 as they add 12.5% service charge to the bill which makes it around £18 per head-£20 if you intend drinking water! So yes my feelings are mixed. I was unhappy about my treatment on the night I was there, especially as it was my anniversery, However I would say that it would still be in recent good restaurant guides if the staff had been less rude, and I would have had a better evening. 2614

Rating: Souk, more like Suck! Having read the rest of the reviews concerning this restaurant, the only award this restaurant should be awarded is one for extreme inconsistency; and when it is poor, it is very, very poor indeed. Despite having an a la carte menu posted outside the restaurant, my group of 8 discovered that there was only the choice of a set menu on offer - obviously very convenient for the kitchen, waiting staff and restaurant profits, not so convenient for the customer. Service was abysmal, the waiting staff were miserable and clearly did not want to be there (perhaps they were dreaming of sunnier climes back in their homeland rather than being forced to work in this subterranean hovel.) They were rude and disinterested, the only effort they seemed to make was in charming a table of young women. The food we eventually received did not accord with that set out in the set menu. For their convenience, they served the food in collective plates for us to share; however, I think they neglected to remember that we were a group of 8, not 4. On top of that, they decided to overcharge us on the bill. With no apologies, the bill was amended, and was still wrong. It is extremely unpleasant to be viewed merely as a unit of profit rather than a valued customer. The food was adequate, although it had clearly just been reheated. And at the price we were paying, we deserved better. If one is looking for good quality North African cuisine, there are far, far better places out there than this overpriced excuse for a tourist trap. We should have known better. Avoid this place like the plague!!!

Rating: I have always had mixed feelings about Souk, until last month. I went there a few times, in 2 occasions for a birthday party and another couple of times or so with a girlfriend (girls alert! if it's your intention to go there and catch up with a friend, well don't - the waiters tend to think that because you are females it is ok to assle you constantly and be overly flirtatious!!!) . Anyway, the first birthday was great. We had a really nice table, good service, interesting food, etc. The second birthday was the complete opposite. We were given a table in the middle of the basement floor, 11 people squashed on 2 tiny tables put together....no room on them for the plates, let alone for the servings of food and drinks!Am definately not going there again after booking a table for several people for a birthday party a few months ago. I booked several weeks in advance and couldn't believe the amount of calls requesting confirmation, credit card details and so on I received!!Every call would be from a different person who had different details from the ones I clearly stated when reserving the table...and I spoke with the manager! Then 2 days before the party I was told that we would have only 1.1/2 hr for our meal, drinks etc. because they HAD to take another booking and it was a busy night ( and I booked the table for 15 people).....they were surprised when I cancelled the booking and was told to be "open minded & flexible" and to understand that the restaurant is very popular... 1739

Rating: After several trips to Souk, I can only sing it's praises! The food is authentic Morrocan fare and both myself and friends have never been left wanting. Portions more than ampla and standard of food truly as you would expect ina Morroccan souk. The truly remarkable thing is the atmoshere. My favourite room is the grotto downstairs in the back and the belly dancing is always entertaining. After watching several of my friends give it a go, I can honestly say it is well worth the trip. Beware the house cocktail, while nice, they do add up, and so do the sheesha pipes. The £15/person set menu is a winner and good for vegetarians with drinking and smoking sheesha adding a bit more than anticipated most times. You may pay a little more than you expect but then where else in London can you escape London right in the heart of the West End?!? A big thumbs up!!!1416

Rating: If I wanted a few dips and pitta bread followed by a few chicken strips and salad i believe they do a similar thing now in Burger king for under a fiver! It wasn't so much the pitiful size of the portions, because al la carte is as much in the visuals and suptle combinations of the food as the size, but it was bar snacks arranged nicely at an extortionate price. I went there for my birthday, arranged well in advance, they didn't have a record of my booking as i booked through a promoter. The promoter they use had agreed a lower rate for the food, which on the day wasn't honoured. i wasn't told the service charge was optional and as the drinks were west end prices, my guests ended up paying @£40 per head instead of £20, and some of them only ate! The service was way to pretencious for just another little bar with food in the west end, you have to build up a reputation first before you start getting arsy to people! i am still pursuing my over charged bill and getting no where, lesson learned i guess, but i really truely wouldn't recommend it. 1415

Rating: I went to souk as part of a large crowd. Although very nice and intimate, a large number of people will not enjoy the practical dificulties in actually eating here. The food was ok, but very little to go around. The bill was extortionate for what we actually recieved and you'll probably have to find a Mcdonalds or something afterwards - oh and a good dry cleaners. conditions were so cramped red wine is bound to get spilt all over your brand new jacket!1368

Rating: Well, it's definitely North African, I can say that much. The food is okay, the service... well it's kind of a clear your own table sort... and the bottles of wine are brought to the table already open... very shady, but then, like I said, very North African. The belly dancer comes in for 30 seconds and then you get a £35 charge added to your bill along with a 15% gratuity. I felt like I was in the streets of Morocco haggling with a merchant to sort out the bill. 1224

Rating: Quite possibly one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. Understandably, (or not!) in the Leicester Square area good restaurants can be hard to find, but I feel sorry for any unsuspecting toursist that happens to stroll in here. Basically, they must rely on their customers being tourists that will therefore not able to return, as they provide unimaginably poor service, over cooked bland food and create an 'atmosphere' by keeping the lights low and the restaurant smoky. The floor seating and middle eastern rugs and throws may be great with the lights down but i suspect the reason why they keep it like this is because the restaurant is filthy and unkempt. Judging by the state of the toilets and the carpet I say 'bring in the health inspectors!'. In it's time it may well have been a great place to go, but sadly now - it is most definitely NOT. 1136

Rating: Couldn't fault the place really, we had a great meal for 21 people, all sat in the same room together last night. You don't have any choice, other than a wide selection of delicious starters and main courses. The lamb was particularly good, soaked, we thought, in Rose Water. If you are fussy about things going absolutely smoothly, I could see how you might get a bit frustrated - we were asked at 6pm to postpone our arrival from 7.30 to 8.00. But if you just relax, lay back and settle into the ambience, you will have a fantastic time! 761

Rating: I went to Souk and was disgusted by the way that I was treated. The waiters were very rude from the start to the end. I had ordered a alcove whereby all of our group would be able to sit together, however when I arrived we were placed on seperate tables with no room to move our arms to eat in comfort. Despite having paid all of the money before eating, I was informed that i hadnt paid and would have to pay more. When I had paid in person, four days prior, i had watched it be written in the bookings book. However when I complained they had ripped out the whole month. I would never recommend anyone to go here, they mocked us all and tried to rip us off for the whole meal. 745

Rating: Food was mediocre at best with small portions. I was forced to ask if all of our order had arrived, and the waiter said yes. However he turned up 10 mins later with an additional dish for "free". Overall it was terrible value and the wine was awful. Upon paying the bill we (party of 6) gave them some cash with the remainder on a card. They took the cash and put the full amount on the card. It was a good job the the cardholder noticed and got a refund. We all had the feeling that they were trying it on.......... not a good way to spend an evening. Beware !733

Rating: Table booked and seperately confirmed for 8:00, but they only had it for 9:30 - and initially tried blaming us. Food quantities would have been OK for 4 people, but there were 11 of us. Food quality was OK, but the bottles of Morroccan wine (no other choice) were disgusting and not worth the inflated price tag. We also were provided with what seemed like a small amount of lemonade with a sprig of mint in it (We were told this was 'Arabic Vodka' which sounded rather dubious). These turned up on the bill at 4 quid each, even though the impression they gave was that they were complimentary. The bill had several additional items. On the whole we felt like we were being taken for a ride. A most unenjoyable evening.700

Rating: Okay food (apart from the watered down wine) and terrific atmosphere but the worst service I have ever received. Ask to sit downstairs as the staff are much friendlier and the atmosphere even better - we only got down there after I complained about being brought all the wrong dishes. Disappointed birthday.. 489

Rating: Never expected to find this ambience amidst the hustle and bustle of Central London.Food and Service were as you would expect in a good restaurant. What took it to a higher plane was the ambience and the decor of the place. You must try the mint tea and the hukka after food.Simply awesome.A must visit place for you.470

Rating: Wonderful decor - you wouldn't imagine that you are in the centre of London! Service is so friendly without being intrusive - just warm and genuine. Food is generous and delicious!! There should be more restaurants in London that reflect the richness of the city's diversity. Just don't tell too many people, else I won't get a booking next time I want to go...132
