My husband and I went to this place today in search of an authentic Thai taste to kick start our taste buds before we go to Thailand for 2 weeks.

The Thai waitress was very patient as we asked about Thia food and recommended the folowing and we ordered her recommendation:

chicken dish number 34. pad krapow gai stir fried chicken with fresh basil leaves, chopped chilli and garlic…£7.95
73. steamed thai jasmine rice …£2.50 (to go with the chicken dish as rice is not included)
and I had
59. pad bah mee noodles stir fried egg noodles with chicken, prawns, mushrooms, spring onions and baby corn in a light soya sauce…£7.95
with number 10. tom kah gai hot and sour chicken soup, with lime juice, lime leaves, lemon grass, galangal, and coconut milk…£5.95 (as starter)
A coke and a Pineapple juice.
All at a cost of about £34.50 including service charge of 10%

My American husband asked me to include the point that the portions were kids size portions as the bowl of rice and chicken dish he had was very small (maybe 4 tabelspoons of rice),but I was very happy with the portion and taste of the delicious crunchy flavours of my noodles ( a side plate size order). The chicken had an aniseed aromatic flavour of some sort with chilli and basil which was v.nice.Not as chilli hot as we exected it so we order a lovely zingy chilli sauce side order which heated things up a bit.

The soup was an excellent tangy hot sour flavour with a coconut ginger zing but i was a bit put off by brown looking small mushrooms bobbing up and down in my bowl, would have been much better to not have them in it at all.

The service was very quick,we received our food in about 10minutes and it was reasonably hot and fresh looking.

After our meal the waitress came with the desserts menu and was very friendly and smiled apologetically about the food not being quite so Thai authentic as she would have liked us to have tasted (in view of our request for authentic Thai food to prepare us for the food we will be tasting in Thailand!)
desserts:
We were going to order golden bananas crispy fried banana nuggets topped with honey and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream …4.95 or sticky rambutans rambutans filled with pineapple topped with syrup, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream…3.95 but the waitress admitted that the former was not an authentic Thai dish and that the latter rambutan was canned and not a fesh fruit (when we get to Thailand it is in season she said and better to taste it there!)

All in all, tasty food,a little pricey given the simplicity and shabby chic nature of the restaurant dining area (it is a casual looking place with jazz music in the background-relaxing but not Thai),honest staff(!) and also very quick service and delivery of food, but not quite as authentic as we were searching for....but enough to introduce us to the general jist of what to expect on our holiday :)

My friends and I stumbled into this place on my first trip to London simply because our flat happened to be near Kensington High Street and it was open. It is unpretentious inside, and as noted, it is rather pricy, but the dish I had was so good I have been dreaming about it for the past two years. I had a noodle dish, the pad nard lar, I think, and it was truly amazing, the best Thai food I have ever had. My friend had the drunken noodles, which had a wonderful flavor, but were very very hot. I am returning to London this Christmas and New Year and I definitely plan another trip to the Papaya Tree.

food is good. but 4 pounds for a bottle of water is a rip-off. it's not that posh that it would justify such a pretentious price for water.

The review in Timeout does not do this place justice. The decor is simple and the couple who run the place really friendly. We have been to the Papaya Tree on many occasions and have found quality of the food to be excellent. Not the cheapest Thai in town, but well worth a visit if you want to have a very enjoyable evening in W8.
