LondonEats.com Review:
Review below was when the restaurant was called Fish Hoek, it has now been reopened by Michael Nadra. It may sound silly, but the main requirement here is that you love fish as there are no other dishes (apart from dessert) that are not from the ocean. We found the menu to be extensive and that it recently seems to have changed moving more towards British Isles fayre, but still retaining the South African and World dishes as well. All dishes are available in both half and full size portions and so we opted to share 5 half portions, a side order and shared dessert. Our selection to share were Oak smoked Grimsby haddock (£5.25/10.50) - a strong favoured dish served in a mustard sauce with mash; East Coast Red Mullet (£6.25/12.50) - my favourite and served with sugar snaps and saute potatoes; Grilled Skate Wing (£6.50/13.00) - a little disappointing as the peri-peri butter was bland; Australasian Barramundi (£8.25/16.00) - meaty and served with a Vietamese ginger and lime sauce and finally Pacific Halibut (£8.50/17.00) - in a spicy Thai green curry sauce; our side order was Thick Cut Chips (£2.50). Generally we were pleased with our selection and chose the Libertas Chardonney (the house white) wine at £14.50 which was a good complement.
The service was varied - the staff did explain items on the menu to us, but were slow on the uptake when clearing plates and topping up the wine. We also found the tables were too small and too close together for comfort. We finished our meal with the Cinnamon Banana Springrolls (£5) which were just okay and lacked any real flavour.
The total bill came to £61.75. So, despite a few minor issues (that could easily be resolved), we did enjoy Fish Hoek although not as much as its sister restaurant Dumela (formally the Springbok Cafe/Grill).

Heather Wednesday, September 14, 2005 | Rating: We expected good, interesting fish, instead we had bland unimpressive dishes. Having eaten fish straight out of the sea in Seychelles where the fish is divine the food was incomparable and disappointing. Seats are far too close together - we endured fellow diners rants. Not impressed, we quickly left after one course.3572 |
Evan Jones Thursday, December 12, 2002 | Rating: Being to South Africa obviously helps when selecting the fine fish on offer, which is mainly from the African continent. But for people who have no clue, you can't go wrong. We had Butterfish and Mozambique Prawns to start with, followed by Mossel Bay Sole and Barracuda. First class seafood!725 |
Lisa & Simon Wednesday, August 21, 2002 | Rating: This has become one of our favourite restaurants to date! Absolutely scrumptious & charming all round...547 |
Doug Steel Monday, July 01, 2002 | Rating: I thouroughly enjoyed the selection of unusualfish dishes, we tried snoek, steinbras, stumpnose and a few others. Go for several half dishes to sample more. Staff were pleasant and effiecient. Place was busy. Not cheap at around £40 per head, but worth it. 472 |
